Phase I: Clear Liquids (7-10 days after surgery)

Phase I: Clear Liquids | Phase II: Full Liquids | Phase III: Pureed Foods

This phase of the diet progression will be started the day after surgery and will continue after you are discharge home. Follow this diet progression until your first scheduled post-op visit with your surgeon (usually 7-10 days after your surgery).

Here are some guidelines to follow for this phase:

  • Drink only sugar free, non carbonated, caffeine free beverages. This can include:
    • Water
    • Crystal Lite
    • Sugar-free Kool-aid
    • Decaffeinated tea
    • Broth
    • Diet gelatin
    • Sugar-free juice bars
    • Propel Fitness Water
    • Flat, diet soda
  • Avoid: any juice; any carbonated beverages; any beverages with added sugar; alcoholic beverages;
  • Drink liquids slowly to avoid stretching your pouch. Use your one ounce medicine cup to help you judge portion sizes. You should drink one of these every 1-3 minutes.
  • Do not use a straw. Drinking through a straw allows you to take in extra air and too much liquid.
  • Aim for 64 to 96 ounces of fluid each and every day.

Overall, the diet is inadequate in all nutrients, as it does not have enough calories, proteins, vitamins and minerals for good health. The dietitian will recommend an oral supplement when you are discharged from the hospital.

Jan
Surgery in July, 2005

"I had surgery in 2005. The biggest decision I ever made, but the day I made it was when I attended a seminar by Dr. Mirande. I felt that he was very informative and answered every question thrown his was with no effort at all, telling me that he is a smart man."

"There wasn’t anything that he didn’t tell me about. I knew what to expect t. After my surgery, he still was the most caring person, for and has shown me several times that he is proud of me. Thank you Dr. Mirande"
