What to Expect

Our goal is to provide you with a caring, supportive and efficient process from beginning to end.

Most of our patients find that the process from when they first contact our physicians to the day of surgery takes approximately two months.

Here's the typical process for most bariatric surgery patients:

  1. Meet with your bariatric surgeon to discuss whether bariatric surgery is right for you.
  2. Receive a nutritional evaluation.
  3. Attend a support group meeting.
  4. Receive a psychological evaluation.
  5. Submit nutritional and psychological evaluations and cover letter to health insurance company to gain insurance authorization for surgery.
  6. Receive health insurance authorization for surgery.
  7. Check-in to Southern Oregon Center for Obesity Surgery and be admitted for surgery.
  8. Receive gastric bypass surgery.
  9. Stay at Southern Oregon Center for Obesity Surgery as an inpatient for three to four days.
  10. Learn to follow a postoperative diet of clear liquids for 10-14 days after surgery.
  11. Graduate to pureed food diet for 6-8 weeks.
  12. Re-introduce regular foods slowly.
  13. Begin to lose approximately 75 percent of your excess weight after surgery.
  14. Receive follow-up plastic surgery, if necessary or desired.

"I had surgery in 2005. The biggest decision I ever made, but the day I made it was when I attended a seminar by Dr. Mirande. I felt that he was very informative and answered every question thrown his was with no effort at all, telling me that he is a smart man."

"There wasn’t anything that he didn’t tell me about. I knew what to expect t. After my surgery, he still was the most caring person, for and has shown me several times that he is proud of me. Thank you Dr. Mirande"
